Guided Imagery for Surgery

With these CD's, you can enlist your mind and body's innate wisdom for healing before, during, and after surgery. They were developed in a pilot program for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

They have been used before, during, and immediately after operations with extremely positive patient and physician reaction. "When we compared patients [in this study] to routine patients, we found there was a dramatic reduction in pain medicine and sleeping pills requested." Gregory Fontana, M.D., Director of Integrative Therapies for Cardiac Surgery, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.

This program is now available for general surgery. It has been created to evoke and enhance the body's own inner healing mechanisms, so that patients' experience of recovery is improved. It addresses the autonomic nervous system, helping the body and mind to cope with surgical intervention and reminding the body of its "habit" of healing.

These CD's use metaphors and guided imagery as well as direct suggestions so that the patient enters the surgery with a feeling of calm, generating health-producing chemicals. Throughout the operation the patient is reminded to experience every touch as a loving, healing touch. A strong and positive vision of the future, of being more comfortable and capable, helps move the patient toward recovery in powerful ways.
